Come from Away review — the 9/11 musical moves from Broadway to London Phoenix Theatre

Come from Away is a musical with book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. It is set in the week following the September 11 attacks and tells the true story of what transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon. The characters in the musical are based on (and in most cases share the names of) real Gander residents as well as some of the 7,000 stranded travellers they housed and fed.

World Privilege Plus sent lucky winner Maddy Walsh from Hearst Magazine 2 tickets to see the show and here is what she had to say “Come From Away shines a light on some of the kindness and empathy shown in wake of 9/11, without dwelling on the darkness. It takes a real and humorous look at life in Gander, Canada, the characters will make you laugh and the songs will be stuck in your head for the rest of the evening!”

At the same time, hundreds of whale sharks return to the warm waters of La Paz Bay in Baja California to feed, where travellers can snorkel with these beautiful, gentle creatures. Exceptional Hidden Gem Hotels in Europe

Here are 5 of our favourite boutique hotels as chosen by the World Privilege Plus team. To celebrate the cream of the crop, we takes you through the five European hidden gems that came out on top of our list. All with discounts for members of course.

Hotel Indigo, Krakow, Poland

1

Krakow has long been a creative hub and this art-filled “boutique style hotel in a fabulous city”, housed in a 19th-century, neo-classical building that was once the home of Polish painter Jan Matejko, is a celebration of all that. “A lovely cosy hotel with everything you need”, one floor is dedicated to Matejko, another to playwright, painter and poet Stanislaw Wyspianski and a third to painter and illustrator Jerzy Nowosielski. A highlight is in-house restaurant Filipa 18, named after its street address, offering Polish classics with a contemporary slant. Its menu is based on what’s available at the excellent Stary Kleparz farmers’ market just around the corner, which has been going since the 12th century. Even the cocktails at industrial-chic U-Bar feature drinks made from seasonal local ingredients. “Beautiful city, beautiful hotel,” said readers. They “loved it”.
(Doubles from £58)

2 Hôtel d’Europe, France

2

Originally, the Hôtel d’Europe was a large private mansion built in the 16th century (1580). It belonged first to several noble families from the Comtat Venaissin. In 1740, the house was bought by François de Boutin de Valouse who carried out significant construction work and transformed the building. It then took on the look of a large hôtel particulier of Classical style.[1] The architecture has barely been changed since then. The first important guest to stay at the Hôtel d’Europe was General Bonaparte, on the way back to Paris from his campaign in Egypt in 1799. Period decor and furniture outfit all 44 rooms and suites (Doubles from £58)

3 The Guesthouse, Vienna, Austria

3

It’s hard to imagine that this “just lovely” Terence Conran-designed hotel was once a rather characterless 1950s youth hostel. A five-minute walk from the Vienna State Opera House and not much further to St Stephen’s Cathedral, this stylish, friendly hotel is a temple to classic modern Viennese design, with comfy, studio-like bedrooms with separate living areas, some of which have cantilevered windows with “gorgeous window seats” on which to stretch out to enjoy a book and a glass of something lovely (every room comes with complimentary wine). At the hotel’s relaxed Brasserie & Bakery restaurant you can feast on the freshest bread and pastries at breakfast and contemporary interpretations of traditional Viennese dishes for lunch and dinner.
(Doubles from £232)

4 Hotel Mercer, Seville, Spain

4

Set in Seville in the Andalucía Region, 1.1 km from Plaza de Armas. The glass of cava that gets pressed into your hand on arrival at this “oasis in the heart of the city” sets the tone nicely. In the riverside neighbourhood of El Arenal, Hotel Mercer offers everything you could want on a long weekend in the city. “A true hidden jewel”, this restored 19th-century palace on a quiet cobbled street has just 12 sleekly contemporary bedrooms, two of which come with private terraces furnished with sun loungers and orange trees. After a day’s sightseeing, head up to the rooftop pool and poolside bar to cool off. Then move on to Maria Luisa, the hotel’s contemporary Andalucian restaurant, and drinks at cocktail bar Fizz, both of which are arranged around an Andalucian-style central patio.
(Doubles from £282)

5 Daios Cove Luxury Resort and Villas, Greece

5

It would be difficult to speak of Daios Cove Luxury Resort and Villas without mentioning the cove itself. Here, the surrounding landscape is formed in a stunning concave, giving the azure waters and resort on its shores a feeling of deep privacy. Agios Nikolaos – an arty, sleepy town in on the north-east coast – provides the buzz, while Mirabello Bay offers the glorious horizons and water-sport opportunities. You’ll find sands are white and smooth as silk, the sky a similar shade to the water all year round and the parasols open, waiting for your arrival.

Read more with BookBeat!

2019 has seen the best start to the year in terms of how much I’ve read thanks to one really smart, simple hack. BookBeat — and walking as much as possible.

Because of this one simple change in my life, I’ve got through almost a book a week by the end of the year (read 40 — not bad going and I’ve consumed some incredible content that I’m delighted to share with members, in the hopes you will have a look and try it for a month for FREE). So let’s get to it and share some of the amazing books I have already read.

If you read one book in 2019 .- make it this, I went out and brought this:

1. Lost Connections – Johann Hari
It’s my top choice having been recommended this by a friend and having no idea how incredible I’d find it. It’s an absolute masterpiece that could totally change society and the way we think. “Suffering from depression all his life, he travels the world uncovering stories from fellow sufferers and the key scientists who have shaped the modern world of antidepressants to blow that story wide open, making room for a new, improved one.Image result for Lost Connections Johann Hari

2. Fear trump in the White House Bob Woodward
With authoritative reporting honed through eight presidencies from Nixon to Obama, author Bob Woodward reveals in unprecedented detail the harrowing life inside President Donald Trump’s White House and precisely how he makes decisions on major foreign and domestic policies. Woodward draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, meeting notes, personal diaries, files and documents. The focus is on the explosive debates and the decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One and the White House residence.

3. Rich Dad Poor Dad Robert Kiyosaki
Personal finance author and lecturer Robert T. Kiyosaki developed his unique economic perspective from two very different influences – his two fathers. One father (Robert’s real father) was a highly educated man but fiscally poor. The other father was the father of Robert’s best friend – that Dad was an eighth-grade drop-out who became a self-made multi-millionaire. The lifelong monetary problems experienced by his poor dad pounded home the counterpoint communicated by his rich dad. Taking that message to heart, Kiyosaki was able to retire at 47. 4. Steve Jobs Walter Isaacson
In Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography, Isaacson provides an extraordinary account of Jobs’ professional and personal life. Drawn from three years of exclusive and unprecedented interviews Isaacson has conducted with Jobs as well as extensive interviews with Jobs’ family members and key colleagues from Apple and its competitors, Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography is the definitive portrait of the greatest innovator of his generation.

5. Principles Ray Dalio
Ray Dalio, one of the world’s most successful investors and entrepreneurs, shares the unconventional principles that he’s developed, refined, and used over the past forty years to create unique results in both life and business—and which any person or organization can adopt to help achieve their goals.

untitled
6. Dreams from My Father Barack Obama
A searching meditation on the meaning of identity in America, Dreams from My Father might be the most revealing portrait we have of a major American leader—a man who is playing, and will play, an increasingly prominent role in healing a fractious and fragmented nation.
Image result for Dreams from My Father Barack Obama
7. The Hate U Give Angie Thomas
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Where to go in February

untitled-design

With the Festive season over, many of us look for some much needed winter sunshine and with Valentine’s Day around the corner there are some great destinations perfect for the month of love.

1. New Orleans
Is there a better time than February to visit the Big Easy? Not only is the raw humidity of the Louisiana summer yet to awaken, but the city’s most famous carnival, Mardi Gras, dominates the month. February 13 will be the big day of celebration in 2019, but you can expect a full week of parades, music, razzmatazz and merriment on St Charles Avenue and in the French Quarter in the build-up to Fat Tuesday.
Take me to New Orleans

2. Marrakesh, Morocco
The Moroccan capital is at its best in February, when days are sun-baked but rarely sweaty, and nights are refreshingly cool, ideal for downing cinnamon-spiced pastilla and rich lamb tagine. Spend the morning wandering the souks, skipping from sellers hawking handmade leather bags and sandals to those peddling rainbows of silk pashminas (don’t forget to haggle). Afterwards, plunk yourself at a garden-fringed hotel pool – Four Seasons Resort Marrakesh, Hotel price reduced from £361 to £298 just outside the souk, is one of the most tranquil hotels. Emirates are offering World Privilege Plus members an incredible 5% off flights.

3. Barbados
Powder-white sands lapped by azure waves, frosted cocktails made from punchy local rum, glitzy hotels – if you want a sultry Valentine’s break, Barbados is hard to beat. Sexy places to stay, from hideaway villas to plush resorts, line its western shores, while seafood-stacked restaurants, such as The Cliff or Cin Cin, are perfect for a sundowner tête-à-tête. The cherry on the cake? Tax-free shopping in colonial Bridgetown – because nothing says ‘I love you’ like a cut-price diamond-encrusted watch. With up 60% off over 270 Hotels to choose from your money is going a lot further with your World Privilege Plus Membership.

4. The Maldives
Some 1,192 islets and coral outcrops – stretched across 26 atolls and 35,000 square miles of water – make up this archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean. golden sands, swaying palm trees, azure shallows. If you want variety of terrain, do not visit the Maldives. If you want temperatures in the thirties Celsius and unrestrained beach luxury, you have chosen well. World Privilege Plus have partners with Maldives Aficionado membership Amilla Fushi and Finolhu Resorts (contact us directly for more details) to provide you with a host of complementary services and upgrade.

5. Oman
Neither as grandstanding as Dubai, nor as grand as Abu Dhabi (whose long-in-percolation outpost of the Louvre opened last year, while the Guggenheim has yet to be unveiled), Oman is the calmer cousin of the Arabian Peninsula. But it should not be underestimated as a possibility for winter sun. Both Zighy Bay and Sur are alluring places for beach escapes; Muscat is a city of underappreciated culture and sophistication.
Take me to Oman

6. St Lucia
St Lucia is one of the Caribbean’s most coveted destinations – and with good reason. Its west coast is home to some of the planet’s loveliest beaches, including the golden strip of Anse Chastanet – while the twin volcanic bluffs of Gros and Petit Piton offer hiking and climbing challenges, as well as wonderful photos. Discover the best kept secret in Saint Lucia and immerse yourself in true Caribbean luxury. East Winds is a breath taking tropical garden by the sea, set on a sandy, secluded storybook beach. Our Caribbean hideaway is the island’s original boutique resort, featuring 30 cottage style suites and an Ocean front beach house, tucked away amongst lush plants, trees, and a kaleidoscope of colourful bird life. Members get up to 30% off.

7. Zanzibar
This feted slice of sand and sunshine is a continental junction box – officially African in that it is part of Tanzania, seductively Middle Eastern in the mercantile heritage of Stone Town (which was once the capital of Oman), temptingly tropical in the way the Indian Ocean laps at its sides. Of course, this clash of cultures only makes Zanzibar more exotic – and the weather is largely reliable, flirting with the thirties Celsius as February dawns.
Take me to Zanzibar

8. Hawaii
There can be no doubt that America’s mid-Pacific archipelago requires quite a journey from the UK, and an 11-hour slug of jetlag once you arrive. But there are few better cures for such time difference than the soft sands of Waikiki Beach – the sunshine strip which adorns the southern edge of the state capital Honolulu, on Oahu. And the sight of the volcanic titans Kilauea and Mauna Loa, on the “Big Island”, is sure to awaken the senses.
